Rhen Mahowyn

Once a pirate captain known as The One-Eyed Wolf, Rhen is known now as a Tavernkeep and Moneylender.

-Before The Calamity-

Rhen grew up outside the walls of Ul'dah in Stonesthrow. His father was an Ala Mhigan mercenary, turned failed Gladiator and unlucky gambler. His mother, a Seeker of the Sun, spent much of her time berating Rhen's father for his actions whilst trying to care for Rhen. Whether Rhen knows more about them is unknown as he doesn't speak of them. Instead he talks about the time he spent away from home. Rhen lived as a pickpocket and messenger for shadowy people of The Blackmarket at the age of 12. As he grew so did his ability to ferry messages and other goods across roof tops and through sewers. By the time he was 17 he was so confident in himself that he left for Limsa Lominsa to join The Rogue's Guild. However, he did not like, nor understand their way of operating. Instead, he ended up joining a pirate crew called The Dusk Wolves. He quickly rose in the ranks of the pirate crew, gaining the admiration of all but the captain.

Years later, Rhen would return to Ul'dah to strengthen his ties with The Blackmarket, hoping it would further his position within his crew. His overconfidence, and the hatred gained from his captain, lead to his incarceration. Rhen is unsure how long he was imprisoned for before he decided to become a Gladiator to win his freedom. Unbeknowst to him, he was playing into the hand of his captors who planned to have him killed in the Coliseum. Due to his quick wit and physical prowess, Rhen survived many fights. Over time he gained knowledge of many forms and utilized a myriad of weapons. Despite his seemingly innate ability in combat, his body became riddled with scars. A significant blow to the head cost him the ability to see from his left eye, and for a time, his voice. While some of the scars have faded away, his vision and ability to speak never completely came back.

-After The Calamity-

Rhen never did earn his freedom, and instead was freed by the coming of Bahamut. He escaped the city among the turmoil the mighty dragon brought forth and eventually made his way back to Limsa Lominsa. By the time he arrived, The Dusk Wolves had disbanded due to the collapse of the Galadion Accord. Not willing to give up, he gathered together what crew he could under the banner of The Dusk Wolves.

The Dusk Wolves served as both treasure hunters and smugglers, free of laws that the Adventure's Guild or Grand Companies must follow. Rhen and his crew took on jobs for whoever had the coin; delving deep into dungeons, shipping cargo across the seas, and escorting airships through the skies. While much of the goods made their way into the hands of those within the The City-States, some were sold to The Black Market. Due to this relationship with Ul'dah's underbelly and the profits it incurred; Rhen established a base of operations there. Wanting a chance at a quieter life, Rhen decided to lead The Dusk Wolves on one last job; fixing Chocobo races at The Manderville Gold Saucer. The plan was a success and his share of the money went into converting their base into a tavern called The Coeurl's Whisker. Using their wealth and resources, The Dusk Wolves now operate mainly as moneylenders and couriers, willing to hold and ferry items for anyone with enough coin.

He married Shofie Mahowyn, his long time second-in-command, and the only person who has ever gotten close to him. Having long ago given up ties to his family, he decided to take her name.

Basic Info

The most noticeable things about Rhen are his abnormal height, his musculature, the myriad of scars that cover his body, and his ever present eye-patch which covers his blinded left eye. He chooses to wear modest clothing that will not prohibit movement and at the same time won't draw much attention to him directly.

Rhen is very emotionally detached, his expression never changing despite the situation. The reasons for this are known only to him, but could be attributed to several factors within his life. Due to an injury he suffers from Expressive Aphasia and chooses to speak only when actions alone won't convey his meaning. Those who he remains close to have learned to accept that they may never know what he thinks of them, knowing he'd not remain were he not to trust them in some way.

Most who see him would perceive him as brutish, due to his taciturn nature and large frame. His lack of outward emotional responses and almost constant glower do little to help this. However, these things hide a brilliant tactical mind that is always plotting and planning several moves ahead. There is never a time when he is not thinking about how to turn any given situation into something he can profit from, in one way or another.

Rhen is very driven, with a constant need for personal freedom. There is almost no risk too great in the pursuit of this. As long as he comes out on top, the cost is always worth it. This has earned him a reputation, as well as the title of The One-Eyed Wolf. While many seek him out, many more give him a wide berth.

Combat Abilities

Rhen has skill with many a weapon, but lacks proper form and training given that the majority of his combat was within Ul'dah's arena. His strength lies within his agility and keen sense of hearing. Due to his blinded eye, he prefers to fight at a distance with a bow or crossbow, but is more than able to fight in close quarters with the many daggers he keeps hidden within his clothing.

Other Abilities

Rhen is an accomplished thief and pirate backed by The Black Market in Ul'dah. His connections afford him information and secrets that many would not be privvy to. The knowledge both keeps his pockets full, and the The Dusk Wolves hidden.

Rhen has an aptitude for climbing, which, coupled with his uncanny sense of balance and inherent strength, lends him the ability to scale almost any structure with relative ease.

While Rhen is an able chef, he tends to like extremely hot foods. He is seemingly immune to spices, even going so far as to eat Dragon Peppers as a snack.

Personality

Rhen tends to keep to himself, using the skills that his life granted him to thrive without much need for assistance from others. While not one to turn away company, he is also not one to seek it. Gaining his trust takes time and effort and would only be given as long as he feels it is to his benefit. Despite all of this, he will offer help to those in need without question or compensation, not wanting others to suffer in ways he has.

Rhen puts himself above and before all else in his life and there are very few he would consider a friend. Trust is not a word that fits well within Rhen's vocabulary and he is just as likely to sell someone out as he is to offer them aid; sometimes doing both at once. The number of people he's double-crossed continues to grow, but there are very few who know or live to tell. Despite his given nature, he does have his loyalties and a personal code of conduct which keeps him in line. An example of this would be that he is incapable of doing any harm, physically or otherwise, to any persons less fortunate than himself. However, at the same time, he would see no issue with going against that were the person ever to get in the way of his goals.

Affiliations

Though The Dusk Wolves is registered as a Free Company under The Maelstrom, the true nature of The Dusk Wolves is known only to the crew. As such, there are no formal ties between the two outside of business and their actions are not sanctioned.

Special Gear

During his time as a thief, Rhen had a pair of blades created that double as grappling/climbing hooks. With the aid of these he was able to scale any surface in Ul'dah. Shofie has decided to dub these tools Soaring Talons, but Rhen refuses to refer to them as such.

Rhen had a hooded cloak crafted for him that, when worn, gives him the outward appearance of a large Hyur. An assortment of tools and weapons line much of the inside of the heavy cloak while woven ringmail covered in dragon hide lines the exterior. The cloak, while flexible, gives protection from all but largest of firearms.

Rhen has had a Magitek device created to give him the ability to see with his blinded left eye. The device, which Shofie has dubbed Second Sight, has a HUD that displays coordinates, and time. It can be switched between three modes of vision; Thermal, Spectral, and Aetheric. Due to the fact that it runs on his own aether, Rhen cannot use the device all the time and saves it for missions that he himself is a part of.

Other Notes

Rhen's unusual height and build is due to him having mixed heritage.

Despite Rhen's abnormal size and strength, he is otherwise a normal Miqo'te of low status. He does not have the Echo nor is he a part of anything revolving around quests or the main story of the game.

Rhen's personality pretty much a combination of Kiryu, Griffith and Guts. Despite this, I did not have them in mind when creating Rhen. There are elements of all three characters that do not quite match up to Rhen, but the overall combination fits.

Rhen's voice most closely resembles that of Alucard from the English version of Castlevania: Symphony of The Night.

Rogues, thieves and pirates might know of Rhen as The One-Eyed Wolf and have heard many outlandish tales regarding how he came to be called such. Feel free to make the tale as fanciful as you like, but make sure it involves incredible acts of piracy.

Characters who live and/or work in Ul'dah, live in The Goblet, are in service with The Immortal Flames, a member of the Ul'dan Adventurer's Guild, or have ties with the Black Market would have knowledge of a shadowy Hyur thief who Rhen bares resemblance to. However there is not enough evidence to link these two together. Only characters with ties directly to the Black Market would be privy to knowledge connecting the two, and may have hired Rhen for things the Adventurer's Guild would not touch. Unless your character is very wealthy or very powerful, Rhen would not have stolen from them. Furthermore, if Rhen had stolen from them, they would suspect a cloaked Hyur and have no idea it had been Rhen.

Those who have served as a Gladitor in Ul'dah may or may not know of Rhen, and may have, at some time, fought with or against him.

If you wish to have IC knowledge regarding any of Rhen's past that has not been expressed by Rhen himself, then you must first clear such with me. Any and all direct connections to either Rhen or The Dusk Wolves also needs to be cleared with me directly.
